Co-operative urban and regional development
"How can we organise co-operation and participation for
tomorrow’s cities and regions today?"
Open space conference on June 2nd and 3rd in Berlin
Many European cities and regions are experiencing great changes at
present. The challenges of the future will not lessen, but rather increase.
The demographic change leads to a population which is getting older on average
and many places will as well have to deal with a strong decrease in population
in the future. Migration within Europe will increase. The effects of the
climate change demand for new, environmentally acceptable solutions for
old tasks.
What consequences will follow with regard to mobility and traffic, housing
and workplaces, for the infrastructure and public finances? What possibilities
for action do the players on municipal and regional level have? And what
can instruments of co-operation and participation offer in order to stay
able to act? What experiences have been made e. g. with forms of inter-municipal
co-operation, co-operative project development, public-private-partnerships
or with participatory budgets? What forms of organisation and what possibilities
of financing are on offer for the management of co-operation processes?
At numerous places rich experiences with the handling of these questions
have been made and in many places exemplary solutions have been found. A
transparent and trustful co-operation between the partners is always essential
here. Win-win-options are being developed and filled with life. Socially
integrative city or town reconstruction, LEADER+-regions or cluster strategies,
conventions or guidelines of the European Union are only a few examples, which
stand for an increasing importance of co-operative solution finding strategies.
But unimagined obstacles can emerge, which hamper a constructive co-operation.
Due to this reason it is highly necessary to have a concrete exchange about
the preparation, organisation, co-ordination and moderation of co-operative
development processes, to broaden and deepen knowledge.
The open space conference “How can we organise co-operation and participation
for tomorrow’s cities and regions today?” offers an information pool and
a platform for the exchange of knowledge, in order to profit mutually from
the good experiences, to learn from mistakes and to win new impulses for
your own work. It gathers experts from various disciplines, which offer answers
to burning questions, are prepared to enter a dialogue between colleagues
and enrich personal networks. The open space method provides room for a
creative working atmosphere, in which new co-operation and new ideas for
projects can develop. We use this method in order to promote the exchange
of experiences beyond the boundaries and limits of countries, professions
and hierarchies.
On the basis of requests, ideas and concerns which are important to
the participants the joint agenda develops at the beginning of the conference.
In the second part of the conference the offer of forming an action plan
supports the continuation and realisation of already existing or newly developed
project ideas and co-operations. Here you can find further information
on the method of open space.
